Stage Hog Udo Lindenberg!

Udo Lindenberg is a national icon – every tourist in Hamburg will be told at least one time that he lives in the Atlantic Hotel at the Alster. I am grown up with lots of songs from him – my father played Sonderzug nach Pankow and told us about the political implications of the song, Hinterm Horizont was everywhere when I grew up and in the last years Udo impressed with new interpretations of his old songs and new German rock hits.

And yes, Udo also paints and there’s even a musical. But there is one thing that really impresses me: This man is more than 70 years old and he rocks the stage heavier than any 20 year old I know.

I saw him at the Frankfurt book fair two weeks ago, where he presented his and Tine Acke’s book Stärker als die Zeit. It was hilarious to see this big entertainer on a stage, surrounded by suit-wearing bookish people …and in the end, everyone was moving to his unmistakable voice.

Have fun listening!

A Song For Tuesday: Maybe by Janis Joplin!

Today’s song is a blues classic by the legendary Janis Joplin! The song Maybe may be a pleading, but it’s a phenomenal and convincing one. A great piece of music for a great Tuesday morning ;).

A Song For Tuesday: Constant by Leoniden

Leoniden were the supporting act for Maximo Park’s concert on Saturday. Their performance was powerful (and absolutely crazy). In the end, they had (minimum) one fan more.

A Song For Tuesday: The Woodpile by The Frightened Rabbit!

Today’s song was recommended to me by Birte: The Frightened Rabbit, a Glasgow-based indie rock band. Their pure and lazy sound fits nice with the first day of December!

A Song for Tuesday: Lavender Road by The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger!

The song Lavender Road by the glamorous & über-hipster couple The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger is like a last-reminder that summer hasn’t left totally, yet. …And I am fascinated how much resemblance Sean Lennon has with his father John. Oh, and by the way: I love the look of Charlotte Kemp Muhl!

Kurt Vile!

Here is my recommendation for your grungy start into Tuesday: Kurt Vile! His new album b’lieve I’m going down will be available in September, but the already released song Pretty Pimpin is already on my playlist :).

Le Fits!

My inbox often contains music suggestions (and lots of spam mails). Only rarely it happens that I actually like the songs I find there. Le Fits with their just released album Fisticuffs were the big exception. Their sound is located somewhere between indie rock and folk and I am already a big fan!

Reggae Times: Trevor Hall!

Trevor Hall’s music is a wild mix of reggae elements, Sanskrit chanting and acoustic rock. My pal Birte recommended him to me last week and I was instantly hooked by his exciting sound. Those reggae elements somehow fit perfectly with the chants I only knew from my yoga classes before.

The Wishing Well

The Wishing Well were responsible for the sound of my last two weekends. This multi-instrumental, folk/indie/rock band (I really have no idea where to put them…) was standing in the centre of Osnabrück and playing as well as singing like hell. I was able to hear them a lot more earlier than I first glimpsed them. And what a cool picture they were with their guitars and violins and the cello and the drums… the  lead singer Jai Larkan with his power voice! I only found out now that they are an international band with members from Australia, England, Ireland, Italy, Scotland, Spain and USA. Wow! And Jai Larkan already was on stage with big names as David Gray, James Morrison, Seal and Joss Stone. Double wow! Unfortunately, the videos I found were not able to transfer the energy of the band that I felt when experiencing them live. Thus, maybe follow THIS LINK to listen to some records of them.

The Fresh and Onlys

“I’m stealing from everybody. When I’m writing, what comes out is the direct result of all the best songs I’ve heard. And the best I’ve ever heard are the ones that hit you straight in the gut.”, Tim Cohen from The Fresh and Onlys admitted lately in an interview with the SPIN magazine. The US indie rock band was formed in 2004 by Cohen and bassist Shayde Sartin. Today the band consists of four members, together with Wymond Miles and Kyle Gibson. They are seen as a key band of San Francisco’s “new garage rock” movement and their sound is located somewhere between Rock and Punk and Folk – it is hard to describe… What drew my attention were the guitars, the voice and the texts – the mix of it all. Have fun while listening!
